Internal Affair Unit

The primary responsibility of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit is to ensure the integrity of the Sheriff’s Office. The Internal Affairs Unit also monitors the relationship between the community and the Sheriff’s Office and strives to nurture mutual trust. It serves as a mechanism of internal accountability by receiving, processing, and investigating, complaints concerning the conduct of the employees of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. These complaints may allege violations of criminal law or Sheriff’s Office policy and may originate from outside sources or from within the Sheriff’s Office.

The goal of the Internal Affairs Unit is to ensure that the integrity of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is maintained through an internal system in which objectivity, fairness, and justice are guaranteed by an impartial investigation and review of complaints made against any of our employees, policies, or procedures.

Complaints

Complaints can be made in person by coming to the Internal Affairs Office during normal working hours by telephone or by mail.

It should be noted, that if you are planning to visit the Internal Affairs office in person, please call for an appointment in order for the process to be completed in a timely manner.

It should also be noted that complaints received regarding sworn employees of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office are governed by the Kentucky Revised Statutes, specifically KRS 15.520, "Complaints Against Police Officers" and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit abides by the guidelines of this statute
